What is Tooth Whitening?

Tooth Whitening is the act of making your teeth and therefore your smile whiter and brighter without removing or damaging any tooth structure.

How does it work?

Hydrogen Peroxide is the active ingredient in tooth whitening gel. The hydrogen peroxide molecules diffuse into tooth structure and oxidize stains from within the tooth.

Does it harm teeth?

The use of hydrogen peroxide was initially developed to treat gum disease, as it is antibacterial.

Tooth whitening is one of the best cosmetic treatments you can have to give you a better smile, as research has shown that it causes no detrimental effects on the structure of teeth.

Does it have any side-effects?

The only side-effect tooth whitening has is temporary tooth sensitivity. At the Lincoln Smile Centre, we have developed a protocol that virtually eliminates tooth sensitivity.

How long does it take?

There are two main ways of doing tooth whitening: In-office “Laser” tooth whitening, and home tooth whitening.

A combination of home tooth whitening and in-office tooth whitening is by far the most effective way of doing tooth whitening. In general, 2 weeks of night-time home tooth whitening followed by an hour of in-office tooth whitening will result in the desired effect.

How long does it last?

Once teeth are whitened, they will slowly get darker again, the rate of which depend on your habits, e.g. smoking and the consumption of black coffee and tea. One of the main benefits of home tooth whitening is that you can keep your teeth white for as long as you want by doing one night of tooth whitening every 1-2 months.
